Distance
How far the searcher is from you. You cannot change this, but it sets how wide your reach can be — and it explains why results change a few blocks over.
Home/Check your ranking
Nothing mysterious about it. Google shapes results around the person and the place, so the position you see from inside your own shop does not count. Learn to check the real one first.

First, one thing
Search for your own shop on your own phone and you are always first. Almost every owner has tried it, and then relaxed.
That is not your ranking. Google shapes results around who is searching, where they are, and what they searched before. You search for yourself from inside your shop every week, so of course it puts you on top. A stranger three blocks away may see three completely different businesses.
Check it yourself
No tools needed. Five minutes.
Sign out of Google, or just use incognito. This strips out the bias your own search history creates.
Search from somewhere other than your shop, or change the location at the bottom of the results page to where your customers actually are. Move the location and local results move.
Do not search your company name — of course that is first. Search what a customer would type: "dentist flushing", not "ABC Dental Care".
The three businesses on the map and the blue links below them are two separate rankings with two different playbooks. Decide which one you want.
What decides it

Whether the Business Profile is complete, the category correct, the photos sufficient, and the details consistent with your website. Easiest to fix, most often ignored.
Review count, average score, how recent they are, and whether you reply. Slowest to build, hardest for a competitor to copy.
FAQ
Because you should. Google varies results by location, device and history — the same person searching an hour later can see something different. Trends matter more than any single check.
Paid tools simulate a search from a location you choose, which beats searching from inside your own shop. But it is still a simulation. The accurate source is Google Search Console: real data from your own site, and free.
For local search, what matters is whether you make the three spots on the map. Fourth and fortieth are closer than they sound, because most people never scroll.
Yes, at no cost. We run the search from a grid of points around your address and draw you a map showing which blocks can find you and which cannot.
